Makeup artist Q&A

Check out our question and answer session with Natalie Harrison-Wright, 29, a Yorkshire based professional makeup artist.

How long have you worked in this industry?

10 years

Have you noticed any key trends within bridal makeup?

Fifties /retro pinup is becoming increasingly popular.

Have any of these trends changed during your time as a makeup artist?

Bridal used to be all about natural looks and pink/purple eye shadow. It's getting more popular for a heavier cut crease and contour.

Have you got any advice for a bride looking to do her own makeup? Still have a trial with a professional but treat it like a makeup lesson or go to your local department store. Not all are makeup trained though so do some research and ask questions.

Have you got any tips and tricks for brides who have their makeup done and then want it to last all day?

It really starts before the base for a good lasting finish. But, yeah, spray on some setting spray.

Do brides tend to know what makeup they want or do you have to guide them?

A little of both. Some can be so sure with a picture and some can be vague. Some have unrealistic expectations and don't quite realise that Kim k's face is a different shape and colour to their's and that you won't look exactly like that person! Some people think they want dramatic but then when it's on they totally change their mind. This is why trials are so important.

Have you got any stories about a nightmare client?

Many. I think people all deal with stress in different ways and brides are no different . There's such high importance held in one day it can be very pressuring for them and me for things to go right. A few diva fits here and there but hey it's just part of it all.
